· OEMs and Tier Ones including Lotus and Goodyear opt for cubiX vehicle motion control software as key step towards the full software-defined-vehicle
· cubiX software controls chassis attributes to deliver an integrated safety, refinement and ride experience
· ZF is heading towards a first production date (SoP) for the Steer-by-Wire system
Solihull, United Kingdom. ZF’s first pure software product is enabling OEMs and Tier Ones to deliver vehicle stability, safety, precision and performance from a single control unit. Working with sensors and actuators, cubiX networks all chassis systems for control of longitudinal, lateral and vertical vehicle dynamics. Compatible with actuators such as dampers, brakes and steering, regardless of the manufacturer, the first applications include the Lotus Eletre electric SUV where cubiX controls all chassis functions such as brakes, front and rear axle steering and active roll stabilisers as well as the electric drive tuned to Lotus’ specifications.
With the emergence of the software defined vehicle, it is now possible that software for a specific functional area such as chassis control can be housed in a central control unit. Until now, dampers, brakes or rear-axle steering have each had their own control unit that had to be integrated into the overall vehicle architecture, adding cost, complexity and weight. Now, ZF’s cubiX enables the car maker to combine complex chassis and driver assistance systems with added flexibility. This offers opportunities for the integration of new features such as Steer by Wire (SbW) and enables differentiation of functions and features with greater autonomy when they are introduced over the air.
Driving refinement
For a pleasant driving experience, the longitudinal, lateral and vertical dynamics of a vehicle must be harmoniously coordinated, especially during automated driving, when the focus is on comfort. ZF’s cubiX software draws on decades of experience in braking, steering and powertrain to ensure harmonious acceleration and retardation, precise steering and balanced damping resulting in supreme refinement. The cubiX control software interlinks and coordinates the active and semi-active actuators with a control algorithm. This optimum interconnection of the individual actuators results in new functions that increase not only the ride comfort but also the dynamic handling and safety of the vehicle.
Safety as standard
The cubiX software also forms the basis for progressive driver assistance systems and has the potential to extend into other aspects of vehicle dynamics: the “Trailer Stability Assist” function can be used to minimise a caravan snaking. Earlier this year, ZF announced a collaboration with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. By integrating tyre and road data from Goodyear SightLine into the ZF cubiX system, it offers further opportunities to enhance vehicle responsiveness, more direct and linear steering, improved turn-in response, increased stability, reduced controller workload and minimised intrusive interventions. For example, when hydroplaning severity is detected, the cubiX software will instruct the chassis actuators to apply corrective measures, stabilising the vehicle. CubiX has been developed across ZF’s Global project teams, each working collaboratively to develop the whole. ZF in the UK supported projects for the safety module development and testing, and the development of vehicle lateral trajectory control using novel Neuro-PID (AI) control techniques.
Future proof
ZF is heading towards a first SoP for a Steer-by-Wire system. SbW replaces the mechanical system between the steering wheel and rack with an electrical connection. Development of such systems is being supported at ZF’s UK R&D Hub and will be a further enabler for steering as part of driver assistance once it is integrated with cubiX. Applications could include assistance during loss of control or more intuitive feedback through the wheel than is possible today with intrusive ADAS systems.
Commercially viable
Beyond passenger cars, cubiX is now being developed for commercial vehicle applications where autonomy can be more easily deployed. The added safety and precision control offered by cubiX is enabling more automation in trials in a port freight yard in Germany.
“By taking care of this complex motion control, OEMs can focus on their core competencies, defining the overall vehicle experience and perception,” says Bal Panaser, vice president, chassis electronics, ZF Solihull. “cubiX opens up new and efficient ways to bring enhanced safety and driver assistance features now and into the future.”
