What I learned during my summer internship at Elan

Emi, an undergraduate at the University of Warwick, has spent the past four weeks interning with us before starting her second year of study. As Emi is considering a career in PR and marketing, she got involved from day one. She worked across a range of areas, developed new skills and enjoyed every second. Read her blog to discover what she did and how the experience will help her in the future.

“Spending the summer as an intern at Elan has been an incredibly rewarding experience, providing a valuable insight into the fast-paced world of public relations and communications.

My journey with Elan and Talacom actually began several months before my internship. During my first year at university, Tala’s Heather visited as a guest lecturer to speak about the PR industry. Hearing first-hand about agency life, client relationships and the variety of work involved immediately sparked my interest. Fast forward seven months, and I found myself joining the team for a four-week internship that exceeded all expectations.

From day one, I was trusted with meaningful responsibilities and encouraged to get involved across a wide range of clients and projects. The experience provided an excellent introduction to agency life, allowing me to develop practical skills while learning from an experienced and supportive team.

Throughout the internship, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks, including drafting press releases, supporting content creation, attending client meetings and assisting with social media activity. The diversity of work meant that no two days were the same, giving me a well-rounded understanding of the services Elan provides and the role communications plays in helping clients achieve their objectives.

One of the standout moments of the internship was attending a client visit to restoration and motorsport specialist, Tolman, for a dedicated social media content capture day. Seeing the process of creating engaging content first-hand was a fantastic experience and offered valuable insight into the planning and execution that goes into successful social media campaigns. A particular highlight was getting up close to an iconic Peugeot 205 GTI, a car that has even featured on Top Gear.

Beyond the practical experience, the internship reinforced the importance of creativity, collaboration and attention to detail within the communications industry. Every member of the team was welcoming, supportive and willing to share their knowledge, creating an environment that encouraged learning and development.

As my internship comes to an end, I am incredibly grateful to everyone at Elan for their guidance, trust and support over the past four weeks. The experience has given me a deeper understanding of the industry, strengthened my skills and confirmed my enthusiasm for pursuing a career in PR and communications.

A huge thank you to the entire Elan team for making this such a memorable and valuable experience. I look forward to seeing what the future holds and applying everything I’ve learned during my time with the agency”.
